Item Description
1.25" without maker name or back paper. We date this button based on the construction of it along with this particular typeface which was very popular in the mid-teens, WWI era. Button reads "Saint Mary's/Campaign Solicitor/Industrial School." This button was worn by those attempting to raise funds for the St. Mary's Industrial School For Boys. In 1902, Ruth's father, mother and a Justice Of The Peace filed the form that legally labeled George Ruth Jr. then 7 years old, as "Incorrigible And Vicious...Beyond The Control" of his parents. He was committed to this school and legally removed from his parents care. He became a ward of the Xaverian Brothers and he entered the school June 13, 1902. Ruth would spend most of his next twelve years inside the walls of St. Mary's. When he left for good it was because he signed a professional baseball contract. The only item we have seen from this institution so influential in the development of Ruth. NM displaying Mint. One known to us.
