Item Description
Following the initial sets produced in 1887 and 1888 by their competitors, Mayo produced their own set of "stiffbacks" in 1890 and titled it "Prizefighters". One of the rarer pre 1900 sets, these blank backed cards featured great old time boxing legends such as John L Sullivan, Jack Dempsey and this particular card of Young Griffo. Griffo turned pro in 1886 and fought primarily in his home land of Australia. He held the Australian featherweight title for many years, and in 1890 challenged Torpedo Billy Murphy for the World Featherweight Title and won in the 15th round after Murphy retired. He defended the title four times before vacating it to fight at a higher weight. His last bout was in 1904. This card measures 2-7/8x1-5/8" and has a blank back with no number from a set believed to consist of around 22 cards. A better than average grade on a card from a highly sought after set.
