See multiple artist jam piece original art #1799. Dated in pencil “June 1989” at upper left. 8-1/8x10-1/8” sheet has 7.25x7.5” total image area in pencil w/nice portrait of smiling Shel in center. Sheet has light hairline vertical fold through center as mailed, otherwise Exc. Ultimate comic strip and comic arts fan Shel Dorf (1933-2009) took over the “Detroit Triple Fan Fair” convention w/Jerry Bails in the late 1960s. He moved to San Diego in 1970 and put on a small convention w/young friends including Richard Alf (who helped pay expenses), Mike Towry, and others. That small convention eventually grew into “Comic-Con International”, attracting tens of thousands every year. Shel lettered the Milton Caniff “Steve Canyon” comic strip from 1977 to 1988 and did numerous interviews w/cartoonists and celebrities. In late 1983 he gave Charlie and Joan Roberts their first jobs after moving to Ocean Beach, CA. Charlie ruled the lines for Shel’s lettering and Joan transcribed interviews. From the Charlie Roberts Collection.
