Item Description
Octahedrites are the most common structural class of iron meteorites. The structures occur because the meteoric iron has a certain nickel concentration that leads to the exsolution (when a solid solution becomes unstable) of kamacite out of taenite while cooling. Offered here is a 2x2.75x1/8" thick slice, w/two cut and polished sides and and uneven edge of fusion crust (due to the immense heat generated by entry into the atmosphere). Etched slice features classic Widmanstätten patterns of intersecting lines of lamellar kamacite. In gaps between the kamacite and taenite lamellae, a fine-grained mixture called plessite is often found. Specimen weighs 55.19 grams and was found in Kern County, CA. Wonderful slice for display. From the Robert M. Overstreet Collection and comes with COA.
