Item Description
13.5x19-7/8" artboard has original pen and ink art by Bill Lignante, who drew "The Phantom" Sunday strip from Aug., 1961 to May, 1962. He provided art for "The Phantom" comic book for Gold Key Comics from issues 1-18 and continued when the publisher switched to King Comics, through issue 28. He also occasionally contributed art to Charlton Comics when they published "The Phantom" issues 30-74. Additionally he had a 16-year career as an animator for Hanna-Barbera and a 26-year career as a courtroom artist for ABC Network News, where he illustrated 60 trials, including those of Sirhan Sirhan, Charles Manson and Patty Hearst. This five panel page is from issue #4, page 2 published by Gold Key and deals w/The Phantom coming up against mask-wearing, witchcraft-practicing jungle natives who wish to destroy Dr. Axel's Hospital (which is under The Phantom's protection) w/the power of "Oogooru, The Ancient Idol Of Murder." The story itself was entitled "Oogooru" as noted in pencil at bottom margin. The Phantom is seen standing protectively in front of Hospital in first panel. The natives place a curse on non-believer in third through fifth panels. The first panel is a 6x12.5" artboard paste-over, which has come loose, revealing Lignante's original art for that panel, which is in our opinion far superior to what was actually used, showing a large image of The Phantom seated in skull-adorned chair, reacting in anger to hearing about the resurgence of Oogooru, noting he had banned the practice. Various blue pencil editorial notations fill margins. Paste-over has caused moderate staining to original first panel art, but all remains legible and would still display nicely. Artboard has lt. handling wear/aging and is Fine/VF overall w/Exc. art. Great "lost" image would make a great display as framed w/all art visible. Comes w/reading copy of the actual comic this art appears in.
