Item Description
8x11" faux leather, spiral-bound 96-page book published in 1939 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Valencia Ballroom, York, PA's premiere big band ballroom. In 1929, the Tassia Family opened their York, PA facility which would attract nationally famous dance musicians. In addition to photos of the owners and interior and exterior of the Art Deco building, there are 24 full-page photos of orchestra leaders. There are seven half-page photos and eight quarter-page photos. Pictured throughout book are Guy Lombardo, Ozzie Nelson, Artie Shaw, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Sammy Kaye, and many others. Back of book has full listing of shows and other performers. Last two pages of the book are intended for autographs and have 17 signed cards attached. These include - Sammy Kaye (who adds "Swing With" - dusty), Glenn Miller, Guy Lombardo (lt. dust and faint crease), Glen Gray, Hal Kemp, Horace Heidt (lt. dust), Frankie Masters, Dolly Dawn, three on one card - Blue Barron/Ronnie Snyder/Russ Carlyle, Johnny Green, Jan Garber (who adds "Cheers"), Ozzie Nelson and Harriet Hilliard on same card, Penny Parker and Al Kavalin on same card, Meredith Blake and Gray Gordon on same card, Norton Sisters (who add "Sincerely") and Harry Babbitt and Ginny Sims on same card. 3.5x5.25" publicity card for Larry Clinton has been signed in pencil. Two loose items include 3x4.25" candid snapshot of Hedy Lamarr singing which has been signed in black ink and 7x8" card w/pencil signature and photo/art composite of Vincent Lopez. Both are VF. Book itself has some lt. wear/aging but is intact and VF overall w/signatures in the back ranging from VG/Fine to VF. A remarkable time capsule of the national orchestra/big band music scene 1929-1939. Extremely low printing for landmark in Hake's hometown of York, PA.
