Item Description
Jasper, a form of chalcedony (see previous item #2946), is an opaque, impure variety of silica, an opaque rock of virtually any color stemming from the mineral content of the original sediments or ash. Patterns arise during the consolidation process forming flow and deposit patterns in the original silica-rich sediment or volcanic ash. This mineral is often used for ornamentation or as a gemstone. It can be highly polished and is used for vases, seals, and at one time for snuff boxes. Imperial Jasper is one of the fine jaspers on the market today. It is found over a wide area in Guadalajara, Mexico. There are many varieties and each "lot" has different characteristics from the next. The colors are typically shades of pink, red, and green as seen in the Imperial Jasper carving of frog by artist Rodin Lee we are offering. The piece measures 2.75x5.25x4" tall overall and depicts a smooth frog on a semi-polished base. While it may appear that the frog was carved separately and attached, this is not the case, as Lee has carved from a solid block, the jasper adding to the piece's visual appeal as its natural green color adds to the frog's appearance of just sitting on the base. Lee is known for his sculptures utilizing this effect. Exc.
