Item Description
7.5x9-3/8" vintage news service photo shows 17 players in uniform in front of dugout. Upper right corner of front has lt. text in fountain pen ink “Habana B. B. C. Champion 1929" which is also repeated on reverse side in lead pencil along with a few notes for publication. Glossy photo has a few lt. handling creases, left side edge has 6" diagonal crease repaired with clear tape on reverse. Still clean, glossy and VG. Jud Wilson played first and third base and was a manager in Negro League baseball. His career batting average between 1922 and 1939 was .351 ranking him among the top five players. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. Chino Smith played outfield and had a .423 career batting average. Pitcher Satchel Paige claimed that Wilson and Smith were the two toughest outs he ever faced and catcher Josh Gibson thought that Wilson was a better hitter than he was. A great image. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
