Item Description
In winter 1972 the San Diego Convention Coalition was a group of anti-war, anti-imperialists, civil rights and feminists activists in San Diego who opposed using the city for the GOP Convention. They were well organized, met weekly and word began spreading of the potential large protests the convention would face as their goal was to bring fifty thousand to San Diego to protest. The Nixon Administration began surveillance of the group and on April 22, 1972 suddenly announced the convention was being moved to Miami. Part of the reason was a scandal that showed ITT Corporation offering financing of the convention in return for the settlement of an anti trust law suit. The planned protests were another reason with Gordon Liddy suggesting to Attorney General John Mitchell a plan called "Gemstone I" that included kidnapping members of the S.D.C.C. and taking them to Mexico to be killed. Mitchell reportedly threw Liddy out of the office with instructions to come back with a less blatantly illegal plan - ultimately leading to "Gemstone III" the Watergate burglary plan and in the end Nixon's impeachment. 17x22". Narrow crease on bottom edge. Reverse has four tape stains. Front displays NM. One seen. Rare and historic.
