Item Description
22x26 3/8" Superior art-board has 19.5x25 3/8" image area in tempera and watercolor. Scene has woman shown from the back wearing a torn bra and portion of her skirt with wrists tied to stakes in dungeon being whipped by man in green uniform with star on his hat with second guard in doorway holding back man who was trying to help her. Her jacket w/Red Cross emblem lays on floor. Art is signed “Ward” in ink at lower left with his distinctive signature. c.early 1960s. Right side margin has red pencil text designating that this painting was done for pages 17-19 of “All Man” magazine. An earlier version of this painting appeared on the front cover of the December 1961 issue of “Real Men” with a few subtle differences : In that version, the guard doing the whipping has a full beard and no red star on his hat. Extreme margin edges have scattered lt. wear with various printing notes but image area will mat and frame to Exc. appearance. A superb illustration with wonderful use of light and shadow. The earlier cover is shown for catalog purposes but not included with the painting.
