Item Description
Last auction, for the first time in our 45 year history, we were able to offer this rare item. However, that example did not have the box or warranty card that this one does. That example sold for $3,162 and in turn brought this boxed one to us. Box is 4x6x1.25" deep. Great image on the lid of Batman holding a secret radio. Batman logo appears on each side panel. Box bottom has a .5x1" hole on one side panel. Lid has noticeable scattered aging/age spotting and slight fade to some of the red lettering. Box still retains gloss and is tight. Fine. Box holds the nice quality hinged metal case w/textured outer covering which contains the small battery operated radio by Topp, ©1966. A metal plate is on top of the case which reads "Batman Secret Super-Micro Radio" along with a bat symbol. Inside of case lid is an illustrated cardboard insert w/additional text and a different image from the box lid of Batman holding the radio. Below him is Gotham City skyline. Bottom of case has silk-like fabric covering around cardboard insert designed to hold the radio. Slight aging to cardboard insert and fabric but hinged case remains Exc. The radio is 1x2.25x2" tall and has a chromed metal front, back is plastic and version in ivory (the previous one we offered had a black back). Front speaker cover has name plate. Attached by chain to one side is metal medallion with bat symbol on one side and text "Transistor Bat-Radio" on the other. This medallion is actually to be used to open the screw on back for battery placement. Radio has not been tested and the terminal does exhibit a bit of corrosion. Otherwise interior is clean. Top edge of radio has tiny bit of pitting but nearly full bright luster remains. Plastic back has some aging. Small volume knob is missing disc insert marked "Vol" but tuning knob is complete w/disc. The screw on the volume knob has surface rust. Medallion has noticeable black color loss to symbol side, name side has all black remaining. Radio is Fine overall. Complete w/the original earphone unit that comes in separate hinged plastic case. Final item is the cardstock warranty card that opens to 4.5x10.5". Batman logo repeated twice along w/two different images of Batman. Lt. crease on front and scattered aging. Fine. Very rare and desirable, one of the holy grails of Batman collectibles.
