Item Description
1.5x1-7/8" stiff tan cardboard with two small center holes and a wire twist holding the 1-1/8" tall beautifully detailed sterling silver charm showing Superman with one leg raised and with one arm extended upward which holds a tiny ring so the piece could be joined to a pendant or bracelet. The red enamel paint on his cape is 99.9% complete. The card has name of the maker "Del Weston Creations." The card also reads "Sterling Silver/Copyright 1946/By Del Weston." With this item comes a signed statement from the consignor giving the background history for this particular example. His statement reads in full "I hereby certify that this particular and specific 1946 Del Westin (sic) Creations sterling silver Superman charm was previously owned by Joe Shuster. I purchased 2 of these charms from Joe Shuster's agent, Gary Coddington, in the late 1970s. Gary told me that Joe had a total of 7 charms in his possession. Gary sold me 2 charms, Gary kept 2 in his Superman collection and Gary sold the remaining 3 charms to others. I recall Gary telling me that the Del Westin (sic) Company created a very small number of these charms at the request of DC Comics to determine if the charms could be mass produced and priced to make an acceptable profit. It was determined in a meeting at DC Comics where Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel were in attendance that these charms could not be produced at a price to make an acceptable profit. Joe Shuster retained 7 charms (signed by Hake's consignor).
