Item Description
In addition to being a life-long newsman, McLaughlin was involved in the affairs of his WWII military unit the 94th Division Association. First item is 8.25x10.75" typed letter to McLaughlin signed on “Office Of The Governor” stationery dated April 26, 1951. Letter is three paragraphs about Stevenson’s pleasure at the 94th’s selection of Chicago for second annual reunion plus praise for those in military service past and present. Signed in black ink “Adlai E. Stevenson” above typed title “Governor”. Three tack holes on top edge and a bit tanned. Second is 8x10" Western Union Telegram to McLaughlin with regrets he cannot “Open” the 94th’s reunion due to commitment to address Red Cross group but he says he will try to “Drop In” later that evening. Paper has 4.5" scotch tape and 2.5" archival tape tears repaired on reverse. Third is 7.5x10" glossy photo of Stevenson crowning young woman holding roses with McLaughlin looking on and wearing 94th Division “Chairman” reunion badge on coat. Top margin trimmed off, reverse covered in gray paper residue from mounting in album and numerous handling creases. Signed on lower margin in blue ink “For Harry McLaughlin-With Best Wishes-Adlai E. Stevenson.” Small bit of smudging on “Harry.” Still clean and glossy. Fourth is 5x7" photo of Stevenson and U.S. Representative James Lind of York, PA taken November 1951 at Gettysburg National Cemetery. Photo reverse covered in notations by McLaughlin. Front signed in blue ink “Adlai E. Stevenson.” Front margins have photo crop marks from use in publication. Fifth is 8.5x14" “News Release From Stevenson Campaign Headquarters” dated October 30, 1952 and titled “Transcript Of Remarks By Governor Adlai E. Stevenson At York, PA.” This is three pages. Front sheet has four tape strips at corners. Rest is clean. From the collection of newspaper editor Harry McLaughlin and comes with Hake's COA.
