Item Description
One of the flagship books of the early Golden Age, what we know as Adventure Comics debuted in December 1935 with the original title of New Comics, 30 months before Action #1. For a short while it was known as New Adventure Comics. With issue # 32, the title was simplified to Adventure Comics. It continued under that name until its cancellation in 1983 with issue #503. During the early days, it was the home to many heroes, such as Hourman, Starman and the cover subject of this issue, Sandman. The concept of Sandman is so strong that it has continued in one form or another until today. This cover was created by the most famous artistic team in the history of comics, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. They had taken over Sandman a few issues earlier in issue #72 and they quickly made the hero their own. The cover tale in this issue is extremely important because it contains Jack Kirby’s first artwork for a character named Thor. A similar character would appear over a decade later in the DC title, Tales of the Unexpected #16; that one came complete with a magic hammer. Kirby finally developed the Thor we know today over at Marvel in the early sixties. Simon and Kirby also contribute interior art as well as the cover. The issue contains a Manhunter story. The pages are white. The book is CGC-certified 8.5 (VF+). According to the CGC Census, this is the third highest graded copy they have seen.
