Item Description
This lot and lots through #2212 are dolls personally made by Charlotte Clark, the creator of the first Mickey Mouse Doll authorized by Walt Disney, and available for purchase by the public.  The story of the first Mickey doll creation by Bob Clampett (later of Merry Melodies, Bugs Bunny and Beany & Cecil fame) and Charlotte Clark began Jan., 1930 and is related on pages 31/32 of Disneyana by Cecil Munsey.  Most dolls in these lots were made by Charlotte in the 1940s.  Those for Cinderella characters, Peter Pan and Tramp are from the early 1950s to 1955.  During WWII, Charlotte's cousin's son was stationed near her Los Angeles home and when he married, the couple's wedding breakfast was arranged by Charlotte.  After the ceremony, the family returned to Charlotte's house.  Charlotte did not like having her photo taken and was captured scowling-but it is one of the very few that exist of her.  The newlywed couple had their picture taken with Charlotte's personally made and personal doll collection.  When the couple began their family in Nov. 1946, Charlotte began sending the children these dolls, a process that continued until the mid-1950s.  This auction lot is accompanied by a photocopy of a notarized statement by one of those children and Hake's Americana & Collectibles Certificate of Authenticity specifying the lot number and Auction #201 stating the doll(s) is hand-made by Charlotte Clark, and given to the family between the mid-1940s and mid-1950s.  This group of 3 consists of Mickey at 18" tall, Minnie at 17" tall and Pluto at 16" tall.  Both Mickey and Minnie have ink stamp under one shoe sole "Copyright/Walt Disney Productions."  Mickey and Minnie are mostly velveteen and corduroy.  Pluto is mostly a more coarsely-woven fabric but with velveteen and felt accents.  All have oilcloth pie-cut eyes.  Pluto is missing a separately-formed rear left leg.  The remaining 3 legs each have stitched toe accents and felt paw pads on the undersides.  The leg could be easily replaced if a matching color fabric can be found.  Pluto still has his oilcloth collar.  There is a small 3/16x1/8" fabric dot off the right side of his nose.  His body has 3 or 4 very small 1/8" or so moth holes or partial holes but these really are only noticeable on quite close inspection.  The doll remains extremely clean overall.  He can be made to sit but his thin neck allows the head to droop.  He is beautifully crafted and with large expressive eyes.  Next is Minnie with red silk skirt, green corduroy shoes and panties with lace edges.  She has a long velveteen tail as do Pluto and Mickey.  The flower on her hat is missing, however its stem remains.  There are 2 small .25" long holes on the back of her skirt.  There are 4 small holes over each eye where eyelashes were once affixed.  The lower half of her oilcloth eyes have come loose but they look fine as they are or can be easily tacked down with a glue dot.  Her left arm is re-sewn at the shoulder with a small loss of stuffing at this area.  She remains in extremely clean and overall Fine condition.  Mickey, at 18" the largest of the 3, has one button missing from the back right of his pants.  He is made of black velveteen with red corduroy pants and gold corduroy shoes.  A couple of tiny stitches are loose on the top of one shoe.  The right arm and the seam below it to the waist are re-sewn with a small bit of stuffing missing at the shoulder.  All else remains extremely clean.  A wonderful and unique hand-made trio.  Comes with notarized statement and Hake's COA.
