Item Description
7-1/8x15-1/8" stiff sketchboard has pen and India ink illustration done on sketchboard. Scene depicts boat scene with woman and man caged while man wrestles large snake. Shiphand looks on. Noted as one of the most famous fantasy artists of the 20th century, Finlay produced large quantities of work with meticulous scratchboard techniques, involving black ink applied to white board and Finlay would scratch away the ink to reveal his images. Providing work with science fiction pulp "Amazing Stories" and horror/fantasy pulp "Weird Tales," Finlay quickly became a fan favorite. Finlay has "signed" in the shadows of his art. Scratchboard has slight warp and top margin has paper remnants but art area remains unaffected and N. Mint. Could be framed/matted for a beautiful display. Also comes with "Virgil Finlay...A Portfolio Of Illustrations," a 9x12" publication by Nova Press ©1953 Virgil Finlay. Single-sided pages showcase Finlay's intricate art with several fantastic, supernatural and mythic illustrations. Attention detail is astounding. Covers have aging along margins and spine with light dust soiling. VF with N. Mint pages.
