By 1951, Superman had been going for more than a decade. Over time, his history had become a bit convoluted. The radio show had added characters and aspects to his mythology and a lot of them were absorbed into the comic. While this issue is not a deliberate editorial attempt to straighten out continuity, it is a step forward because it retells and fleshes out his origin. It also gives new readers a chance to get some background on the character. The cover art features a smiling, nostalgic, Superman looking through the Kent Family album. Wayne Boring’s cover creates a real personal atmosphere. His choice of perspective is interesting. By placing the reader to the right of Superman, he creates a feeling of shared intimacy; you are looking over Superman’s shoulder, sharing each memory. The picture of a diaper-clad Superbaby holding a refrigerator over his head softens the image of an all-powerful adult Superman. This issue also features art by one of the best artists to ever work on Superman, Curt Swan. Ed Smalle also contributes art to the issue. The back up store for this issue is the motorcycle riding, country crooning cowboy Vigilante. The pages are off-white to white. It is CGC graded VF 8.0. According to the CGC Census, this copy is tied with one other as the second highest graded copy they have seen.
