Item Description
5.75x8-3/8" hardcover book by Fredric Wertham and published by Rinehart & Company, Inc. 1954. This is the second printing of the book complete w/dust jacket noting "Second Printing." The Bibliographical Note page featuring names of comic publishers cited in the work present in just a few of the first edition copies was totally removed for this printing at the demand of the listed publishers. Arguably the most infamous tome about comic books, this book almost ended the comic book industry w/the author's dissertation on how comic books were directly linked to juvenile delinquency and the degradation of morals among young people. Some of the book's points state that comic books "Are An Invitation To Illiteracy, Create An Atmosphere Of Cruelty And Deceit, Stimulate Unwholesome Fantasies, Suggests Criminal Or Sexually Abnormal Ideas, Create A Readiness For Temptation, Suggest Forms Of Delinquent Impulse May Take And Supply Details Of Technique" among many others. Several comic books of the time were cited along w/illustration from Phantom Lady #17 and Reform School Girl. Book is complete w/dust jacket, which has clip to inner front flap by "Second Printing" notation. Dust jacket shows obvious wear to top of spine and top corners w/creasing and heavy fading to red text on spine. Dust jacket is VG. Inside front cover has clipped article from fanzine (offering commentary on Wertham's observations and listing comics mentioned within book) attached w/tape. Book shows some lt. aging and corner tip wear. VF/Exc. w/NM pages. A nice example of this historically significant publication in comic book history.
