Item Description
17.75x30" cotton. Unlisted in Collins Threads of History but similar to plate 366 on p. 184. The specimen Collins documented was of a smaller size, 13.25x23.5" and we have encountered other similar designs in sizes from 7x12" and 10x16.5" but none larger than this offering and none with unusual top right placement of the canton. The present example has a canton featuring a large edge to edge oval frame centering the woodcut candidate portraits among the 23 stars arranged one in each corner with the remainder arching along the top and bottom lengths of the oval. Additionally, the text in stripes at left is a bolder elongated block lettering than the other examples known to us, likely making this a unique example of an impressive, oversized flag from the ever-elusive 1872 Republican campaign. Vertical crease just left of text, horizontal fabric separation in margin at bottom center, visible moisture marks and age throughout. VG. Campaign flags are the most coveted pieces of early political campaign material with single portrait flags often considered "blue-chip" assets and jugate flags represent yet another level of rarity. Collins listed no jugate flags for campaigns prior to 1868 and this rarity is supported by the infrequence of jugate flag offerings in commerce, making them among the most coveted campaign textiles. This rarity, the fact that the present offerings is the largest size 1872 GOP jugate flag extant, that it remains complete, and the imposing presence of the large portraits make this a special opportunity to obtain an investment grade campaign flag that will easily rank among the cornerstone artifacts of any collection.
