Item Description
The ferrotype, listed as Hake #3073, is 13/16" with 1-1/8" stickpin inserted on fabric cockade. Brass frame has bright luster and tiny text above and below image. "P=T Apr. 2. 1861." Emulsion surface has couple hairline ripples that catch reflected light. Only with magnification does a tiny black line show horizontally across his forehead, but there is no actual loss of the emulsion surface. The ferrotype is extremely fine and displays essentially Mint. The cockade is likely homemade and very well crafted with hand stitching showing only on the reverse. A 22" brown cord is sewn to the oval tan fabric that backs the red, white and blue material so the piece could be displayed on a coat sleeve. The 2.5x5" oval is comprised of 5 layers of material and suspended below are three streamers, each 5" long. Only a couple tiny dot holes in the fabric and trivial age tone on white streamer. An outstanding 1864 Lincoln campaign item from the Philip G. Straus collection and acquired by him sometime prior to 1958.
