Item Description
11x17" DC Comics artboard features pen and ink original art by Mike Dringenberg, who came to prominence w/his work on Sandman, where he started as the series' inker over pencil art by Sam Kieth but switched to penciling when Kieth left after the fifth issue. He went on to draw 11 issues, and his understated, realistic style did much to establish the tone of the series. He is also notable for co-creating the popular character Death. Original art offered here features close-up of Dream lit from below, his eyes closed and his hands held in front of him. Top half of art has been inked solid black and bottom has hand-lettered "Sandman" title in white ink below image of Dream. Art has been signed at lower left corner by Dringenberg, who added "89" date. This art was created for a flyer to promote a personal appearance by Sandman writer Neil Gaiman and Dringenberg at Dringenberg's local Salt Lake City comic shop - Night Flight Comics - in 1989-1990, as corroborated by Gaiman himself, making this an early example of Dringenberg's Sandman work, as the title began in Jan. 1989. Artboard has some lt. corner tip wear and rippling at top margin from ink, but art remains clean and is o/w Exc. Dringenberg has signed again at bottom margin in silver felt tip pen. Unique and historic Sandman art.
