Item Description
A very interesting lot for this Disney classic. The book is by Simon and Schuster ©1940. 9.75x13" with 160 pages filled with great art throughout, some in bw, most in full color including many tipped-in plates. This book was apparently sent to Claude Coats who worked on the film and in turn signed multiple pages and returned the book with a letter. There are 9 pages where Coats either initialed, signed in full and/or made a notation below images which he created. Also signed on one page by John Hench, Disney artist/designer who also worked on this film. Book has nicely illustrated dust jacket. Obvious margin wear with creases, small tears, few small missing pieces. There are also several long crease lines. About VG. Book has margin aging, small faint trace of moisture staining at lower right corner of nearly every page. Book's cover also has moderate scattered aging/staining. However, for the most part contents remain clean, none of the beautiful illustrations or added signatures are affected. Cover VG but contents still Fine. The letter from Coats is 5.5x8.5" on "Walt Disney Imagineering" stationery. Hand-written in ink, he notes his work on Fantasia, signs his full name along with a "P.S." noting that Hench also signed a page. Letter is Exc. Final item is 8.5x11" typed letter on "The Philadelphia Orchestra Association" letterhead. Dated 10/30/37 and signed in ink by Leopold Stokowski. Famous for his role as conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra, he also was selected by Walt to conduct the music for Fantasia. Letter was sent to Dorothy Kohl of The Philadelphia Art Alliance to let her know he will be giving up his studio. Along with his signature, he adds a hand-written note "I Shall Be So Unhappy Leaving This Studio - I Have Been Very Happy Here." Light wear as folded and lightly aged but remains totally clean. Fine. Also included are a pair of programs and pair of tickets for the 50th anniversary private screening of Fantasia.
