Item Description
11x16" artboard w/attached paper overlay features mixed media original art for page 5 of Rose #1, published by Cartoon Books Jan. 2000. A spinoff prequel of Jeff Smith's popular Bone comic book, Rose was a three issue miniseries, exploring the backstory of the titular character. Art is by noted fantasy and comic book artist Charles Vess and features five panels, showing The Great Red Dragon (who also appeared in Bone) joining other dragons to seal Mim, Queen of the Dragons, in stone after she was possessed by the Lord of the Locusts. This battle is shown in the first two panels, w/the following two panels showing the valley forming. Last panel shows the hands of Rose and her sister Brier's teacher, who is telling the story of how the valley formed. Page lacks the final lettered text as published. Pin holes at corners, but displays Exc. Vess has signed in black ink at bottom right margin. Stunning original art by Vess, who earned an Eisner nomination for his work on this title.
