Item Description
5x17.75" artboard has pen and ink original art by Walt Kelly for May 14, 1954 daily strip. Strip features four panels and features Pogo and Churchy LaFemme trying to find out Mouse's secret, although his mouth is effectively glued shut w/caramels. Albert Alligator and Howland Owl come along w/Albert bragging he can get Mouse's mouth open, chastising him for eating the candy as he pops a handful of caramels into his own mouth. Naturally, Albert's mouth becomes stuck as well as everyone looks to him for his suggestion. First panel has been dated and Kelly has signed third panel. Bottom margin has inked inscription "For Donald Holmes From Walt Kelly" ink that has turned brown w/age but remains totally legible. Artboard has vertical fold at center w/pin hole at top center. Back has aged masking tape borders and small "Received 7-7-54 - Don Holmes" pencil notation . Artboard is evenly aged and art remains clean and Exc. Comes w/typed letter on Post-Hall Syndicate letterhead dated June 25, 1954. Letter is addressed to same recipient as art and goes on to read in part "An Autographed Original Strip Is enclosed And Should Be Hung On The Wall Only If It Can Be Useful In Covering Cracks In The Plaster." Letter has also been signed by Kelly in same aged ink. Letter was folded as mailed and has been placed within matte for display purposes. Letter has some scattered lt. wear/aging and is VF overall. Great pair to display together.
