Item Description
Since the introduction of Superman and Lois Lane in 1938's Action Comics #1, there have been countless fantasy stories involving an imagined wedding between the two. After decades of "Will They Or Won't They?" DC Comics published Superman: The Wedding Album #1 in Dec. 1996. Written by Dan Jurgens, the special one-shot issue featured a veritable Who's Who of Superman comic artists and saw the de-powered Superman and Lois Lane get re-engaged and finally married in an in-continuity story. Cover by popular Superman artist John Byrne depicts Superman flying through the skies of Metropolis with a wedding gown-clad Lois Lane held in his arms.

Offered here is 12x17" DC Comics artboard with pen and ink original art for the newsstand cover, featuring Byrne's initial design showing Superman sporting the long hair he had during most of the 1990s and Lois's wedding veil covering most of her hair. Notable Metropolis landmarks like the Daily Planet building and LexCorp Tower can be seen in the background. As this issue saw Superman cut his hair just before the wedding, editor Joey Cavalieri requested Bryne alter Superman's haircut for the cover. Inked "Superman Wedding Spec." at top margin along w/name of Cavalieri and Byrne and publication month. Inked notation at upper right corner with staple holes at top left corner. Back has DC copyright inkstamp and scattered strips of surface paper lifting along top margin. Art remains clean and Exc.

A second 11x17" DC Comics artboard features updated original art by Byrne, featuring Superman's altered hair and ears as well as different positioning for Lois's veil, which now shows more of her hair. Handwritten note in black ink from Byrne below the updated art reads "Here Ya Go, Joey. But If You Suddenly Decide He's Got To Have Ponytails, I Ain't Doin' It!!!" with his signature underneath. Penciling above note reads "Same Size." Top margin has "S - The W. Album" blue marker notation with publication date and "Art Correx" notation and staple hole at tip left corner. Back has DC copyright stamp. Art is Exc.

Art comes with third artboard which has large stat paste-over showing the final version of the artwork that saw publication. Pertinent information has been inked at top margin and stat has long, vertical strip of tape at top center and smaller piece of tape across the ribbons of Lois's wedding bouquet. DC copyright inkstamp on back. Some lt. wear and some small, faint spots of staining to Lois's dress train. VF. Art comes with replacement title stat for display purposes.

Art was obtained by our consigner shortly after it was created and has remained in the same collection for nearly 25 years. Fresh to market, this is the first time this iconic John Byrne Superman cover is being offered at auction. Wonderful and historic original art offering great insight to the creative process in creating the cover to one of the most anticipated and important Superman stories of all time!
