Item Description
10-3/8x16-1/8" art features pen and ink original art (w/screentone accents) for title page of Shazam! #1, published by DC Comics April 1975. Art is by Kurt Schaffenberger (1920-2002), best known for his work on Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family during both the Golden Age and Bronze Age of comics, as well as his work on the title Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane during the 1950s and 1960s. Splash title page features Allegro Scruff, the titular character of Denny O'Neil's "The Pied Un-Piper" story walking the streets of Fawcett City w/three aliens as Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr. fly overhead. Top features stat of Captain Marvel alter-ego Billy Batson and "The Marvel Family" logo strip paste-over stat. Schaffenberger has signed in blue ink underneath this. Rest of text has been hand-lettered. Top margin has inked title and issue/page numbers w/month(s) of publication. Top margin has three strips of white tape and aged strips of cellophane tape at top/bottom center margins. Back has DC copyright inkstamp and some marker text/scribbling. Artboard has some scattered aging but art remains clean and VF/Exc. overall.
