Item Description
Complete set of 32 artboards, each approx. 9-3/8x13-3/8" w/pen and ink original art by Spanish comic artist Jaime Brocal Remohí (1936-2002) for Spanish comic book adaptation of Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, published in Spain by Editoreal Valenciana in 1959. Jaime Brocal Remohí also created art for an adaptation of Verne's From The Earth To The Moon (see following lot) before going on to become one of the first Spanish artists to work on Warren Publishing's Eerie magazine. Art is all original for this publication and tells the classic Verne tale, w/expedition being stranded at sea only to be rescued by Captain Nemo in his Nautilus submarine. Art bears some influence from Disney's classic 1954 live action film. Throughout story, incredible animals are seen, including whales, giant crab and sea otter, giant clam, sharks and other assorted sea life. Upon landing on an island, they spy a kangaroo before being attacking by angry island natives. Story ends w/battle against giant squid. Back of each page has been watercolored for use as a color guide, giving colored appearance when held to light. Each artboard has title paste-over strip at top and page continuation paste-over and page number strips at bottom as well as some scattered editorial notations in margins. Top of page 13 has slip of paper taped at top bearing inked title change notation. The artist has signed on pages 7, 20 and 32. A few caption/dialogue strip replacements paste-overs and scattered white correctional fluid. Artboards have scattered aging and corner tip/margin wear but remain clean and Fine to VF for the most part. Comes w/reading copy of the comic this art was published in.
