Item Description
9.5x12.75" heavy artboard has mixed media original art by Norm Saunders (1907-1989), best-known for painting some of the most iconic Topps gum card releases of the 1960s and 1970s, including Mars Attacks, Batman, Superman, Civil War News, Wacky Packages and others. Offered here is original art measuring 3.25x6" depicting winking cigar store Indian, who holds three packs of Bazooka bubble gum. This art was used for a c. 1975 sell sheet advertisement for the short-lived Bazooka Fruit, Grape and Spearmint 5¢ bubble gum bars. Art comes w/attached and worn paper overlay w/various writing on it. Art itself is surrounded by printer's labels and has handwritten blue pencil text by Topps Art Director Woody Gelman. Back of board has Topps return mailing address inkstamp. Artboard has pin holes at corners and top/bottom margins. Center left has approx. 1.5" spot of surface paper off and artboard has some scattered spots of moisture staining. Fine overall, but art remains clean and Exc. Comes w/copy of the sell sheet this art was used for. Exc. This very artboard was featured in Topps Books' 60th Anniversary Collection Bazooka Joe And His Gang 2013 book, which featured Bazooka Joe items from the collection of Jeff Shepherd. Art comes w/copy of this book, signed in inside front cover by Shepherd. Art was authenticated by Norm Saunders son, David Saunders as well as by fellow Topps artist and historian Jay Lynch (and comes w/email correspondence between Lynch and Shepherd). A very unique lot for Topps collectors.
