Item Description
6-7/8x22" thin artboard has pen and ink original art by Wilson McCoy (1902-1961) for May 17, 1961 daily strip. McCoy is best-known as the second artist on The Phantom comic strip, starting on the strip during World War II and continued up until ill health forced him to stop in 1961. As King Features Syndicate requested their artists work months in advance, his last daily strip was dated Aug. 19, 1961 and his last Sunday strip was dated Sept. 17, 1961. McCoy died July 20, 1961. Art features four panels, showing The Phantom telling his horse Hero to go for a run, where he is joined by The Phantom's loyal canine companion Devil. Last panel shows Hero walking below leopard in tree. Phantom, Devil and leopard have aged screentone accents. Vertical fold at center (between two panels) and artboard has pin holes at top corners. Some faint scattered aging. Fine overall.
