Item Description
Pair of 10.5x13-7/8" Crescent Illustration Boards features pen and ink original art (w/screentone accents) by Gilbert Shelton, a cartoonist and a key member of the Underground Comix movement. Shelton the creator of the iconic Underground characters The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, Fat Freddy's Cat and Wonder Wart-Hog. This original art is for complete two-page A Highway Tragedy story published in DRAG Cartoons #46 in Dec. 1967. Two-part story shows drunk driver coming home with rim of blown tire, telling his wife he hit a wine bottle and it popped the tire. Last panel reveals the bottle was still in the pocket of a wino. Second part shows wino getting up w/tire tracks on him, leaving trail behind him, which he states he hopes is blood and not wine. First artboard has uneven right margin trim and both has page numbers/editorial notations at lower right. Art remains clean and Exc. Backs of each artboard has "Highway Tragedy" title and either "P.1" or "2." From the Archives of Publisher Pete Millar.
