Item Description
7x11" sheet of unlined paper features preliminary pencil original art by Vaughn Bode (1941-1975), an American underground cartoonist and illustrator known for his character Cheech Wizard and his artwork depicting voluptuous women. A contemporary of Ralph Bakshi, Bode has been credited as an influence on Bakshi's animated films Wizards and The Lord Of The Rings. Art features a large monstrous being intently reading pages of a book, w/small creatures turning the pages. Art features characters from Bode's comic strip Deadbone, about the adventures of the inhabitants of a solitary mountain a billion years in the past, which ran in men's magazine Cavalier from 1969-1975. When the strip moved to color, it changed its title to Deadbone Erotica and later simply to Erotica. Comes w/original cardboard w/hand-lettered "'Goddoom' By Vaughn Bode - A Sketch For The 'Deadbone Erotica' Story Board - For The Movie! - Given On May 31, 1972 -" text, indicating use in a proposed film. Sheet shows aging as matted and framed, w/lighter borders and small spot of staining at top. Back margins have some scattered tape staining. Fine overall.
