Item Description
20.25x25.25" open frame contains oil painting original art by Ken Kelly and was used as the cover to The Spirit #10 (published by Warren in 1976). Art was clearly based on line work by The Spirit creator Will Eisner that was published as the cover to The Comic Reader #125 (Dec. 1975). For this cover, Kelly has painted each element in the most dramatic way he can. The tension between drawn black line and painted color seen in earlier covers is still present; most obviously in the interaction between the title lettering and the painted villain hanging onto it, but also in the use of black to pick out certain details in the painting - pistol, eyes, wall cracks. The black lines used to bring forward the Spirit's right shoe are in extreme contrast to the aerial perspective effect used to make his left shoe recede. This achieves a kind of exaggerated 3D effect w/o need for glasses. Pure cartoony pulp expressionism, completely in keeping w/the artistic history of The Spirit and Eisner's ideal of the character. Kelly has signed art at bottom and added "76" date. Exc. and ready for display.
