Item Description
Attached blue paper cover contains 8.5x13" five-page (single-sided) contract between Walt Disney Productions, Ltd. and Earl Duvall (1898-1969), an artist and animator best-known for his work on Disney comic strips in the early 1930s and for a handful of animated short films he directed at Warner Bros. Cartoons. Duvall started as a layout artist at Disney and later worked as a member of the story department at Walt Disney Productions. During this time, he also worked as a cartoonist on the Mickey Mouse daily strip and the Silly Symphony Sunday comic strip. Later, during his time w/Warner Bros., he was responsible for the creation of early Looney Tunes character Buddy. Contract is dated June 8, 1931 and is an employment renewal contract, securing Duvall's services as a "Cartoon Artist" and "General Utility Artist" for a further year on the Silly Symphonies Sunday page. By the time of this contract, Duvall had already ceased working on the Mickey Mouse daily strip to focus solely on Silly Symphonies. The contract noted a pay rate of $100 per week, increased to $150 per week should the artist grant Disney exclusivity. Last page has been boldly signed in black ink by Walt Disney himself, w/Duvall and a witness signing in blue ink below Disney's signature. Sheets are evenly aged and folded as issued, but remain clean and show just slightest handling wear. Aside from .25" tear along right at bottom fold of first page, pages and signatures display Exc. Blue paper cover has some edge/corner tip wear and is Fine overall. The earliest Walt Disney-signed contract to come to auction. Comes with Hake's COA and COA from Phil Sears, recognized as the premier Walt Disney autograph specialist. From the Estate of Disney Artist Earl Duvall.
