Item Description
19.75x26" artboard has pen and ink original art by Buster Brown creator R.F. Outcault (1863-1928) that has been partially hand-colored. Art is dated Sept. 29, c. 1912. Sunday page featured 12 panels in addition to topper panel that features Mary Jane portrait along w/portraits of Buster and his dog Tige. "Buster Brown" Sunday pages were printed both w/and w/o toppers depending on the publication. Page features Buster up to no good, w/first panel showing his mother spanking him w/hairbrush. He then goes on to fake his death by hanging a dummy wearing his clothes from light fixture. After his mother overcomes her obvious shock, she chases him down w/hairbrush. Once she catches him, she ties him to banister and gags him. Mary Jane and Tige then untie him and he makes his escape, w/his mother in hot pursuit, carrying a club in her hands. Last panel features Buster w/pillow tied to his bottom and hand-lettered "I Got Four Hot Spankings Today" text beside his usual resolution relating to knowing his action will have repercussions w/his mother. Buster appears in all panels (albeit as a dummy in one panel), Tige appears in eight and Mary Jane appears in four (not counting topper). Topper and six other panels have been neatly hand-colored (a seventh panel has very faint coloring to wall as was the process of the day, to give the printer an idea of how to color the entire strip). Outcault has boldly signed at bottom of last panel. Penciled dates and measurement along top margin. Artboard is evenly aged and shows obvious corner tip wear, w/upper right corner missing most of 1" margin areas, which slightly affects top of Tige's ear. .75" corner tip off upper left and 1.25" corner off lower right. Pin holes and some small, scattered tears along margins w/scattered pin holes in second through fourth panels as well as to sixth through ninth panels. Back has scattered aging and pencil doodling. VG overall. Great, mischievous content throughout w/addition of nice topper panel. Art was originally obtained directly from Outcault family member and this is the first it is being offered at auction.
