Item Description
15x21-3/8" artboard has pen and ink original art from "Tales From The Crypt" #24, published by EC Comics June 1951. Art by Johnny Craig is for page 21, from "Midnight Snack" story (page 3 of this particular story), featuring a man named Duncan who develops a hunger after reading horror stories. He winds up at a restaurant w/o knowing how he got there, only to be sickened by the smell of cooking meat. First three panels show him in restaurant w/fourth panel featuring The Vault-Keeper breaking into the story to summarize Duncan's plight w/his usual ghoulish glee. Next two panels show Duncan leaving restaurant and reevaluating his actions, w/last panel showing him getting dizzy. The story would continue w/Duncan ending up in a cemetery and digging up a freshly buried corpse. He would pass out and awaken to find a partially consumed body before him. Top margin has faint "Silver Printed" inkstamp at upper right w/handwritten page number and "V-3" notation at top center. Top margin has pin holes at corners and top center as do upper left/right margins. Bottom margin has "Crypt" title inkstamp. Back has William M. Gaines copyright stamp. Artboard has some lt. handling wear/dust soiling to margins, w/faint horizontal crease at center. Art remains bright and clean and would make for Exc. framed display. Wonderful example of Craig's art, complete w/an appearance by one of EC's three iconic horror hosts - The Vault-Keeper. Long held in a private collection, this is the first time this art is being offered at auction.
