Item Description
"Sky Masters Of The Space Force" was a newspaper comic strip created on September 8, 1958 by writer Dave Wood w/art by noted comic artist Jack Kirby, and featured the adventures of an American astronaut. Offered here is 8.5x22.5" artboard w/pen and ink original art for the second strip in the series, published Sept. 9, 1958. Art features four panels, showing Colonel Martin getting into spacecraft, as support staff asks about his daughter Holly, seen below on the launch pad, noting that she gives him a rose before any important undertaking as a token of luck. Last panel shows Holly fearfully doubting her father's return from space. Kirby's pencils were inked by Wally Wood. Second panel has "The George Matthew Adams Service, Inc." strip. "Kirby-Wood" signature in last panel. Top left has penciled "1st Wk - 2 Day" notation. First and second panels have screentone accents and word balloons have some scattered white correctional fluid. Artboard has scattered dust soiling (more noticeable on back) and margin aging. Upper right top margin has two pin holes, .5" tear and upper right corner has 2" corner crease that breaks surface paper. Fine overall, but would make for nice framed display. Early and historic art for this series.
