Item Description
10-5/8x15-7/8" artboard has pencil original art by Jack Kirby that has been inked by Bill Everett. Art is for page 14 of "Thor" Vol. 1 #172, published by Marvel Jan. 1970. Page features five panels, showing Thor (Mjölnir in hand) being surprised by intricate Kirby machinery rising from the ground, controlled by two henchmen out of Thor's line of sight. They engage the machinery, which sprays Thor w/a hallucinogenic mist (rendered in classic Kirby Dots style), causing him to exclaim "By The Golden Gates Of Asgard" before succumbing to the mist's powers. Last panel shows a great close-up angle of Thor's face as his loses consciousness. Thor appears in every panel. Top margin has inkstamped title and issue/page numbers w/Kirby's name, which has faded w/age. Back has Comics Code Authority inkstamp. Scattered faint scattered margin staining and minor corner tip wear. Piece of lightly aged tape in first panel, but artboard is o/w VF overall. Art remains clean and Exc. Privately held since shortly after publication, this is the first time this art has been offered at auction. From the Aaron Goodman Collection, Grandson of Martin Goodman, Founder of Marvel Comics.
