Item Description
10.5x16" artboard has pen and ink original art by Sub-Mariner creator Bill Everett. Art is for page 2 of "Sub-Mariner" Vol. 1 #53, published by Marvel Sept. 1972. Page features four panels, showing Namor the Sub-Mariner convincing Japanese mutant Sunfire to cease his attack on sailors and rescue them while he attempts to prevent ship from leaking more toxic chemicals. Namor's wartime antipathy for the Japanese is noted by how he talks to Sunfire. Namor appears in first two panels while Sunfire appears in first and third panels. Top margin has inked "Subby" title and issue/page numbers. Everett has signed third panel in black felt tip pen. Of note, Everett would pass away a few months after publication of this comic, making this among his last works before his death in Feb. 1973. Back has Comics Code Authority inkstamp. Scattered faint scattered margin staining. Top center margin has aged strip of tape. Artboard is Fine overall, but art for the most part remains clean and VF. Privately held since shortly after publication, this is the first time this art has been offered at auction. From the Aaron Goodman Collection, Grandson of Martin Goodman, Founder of Marvel Comics.
