Item Description
Alex Schomburg (1905-1998) was a comic-book artist and painter, noted for his work during the Golden Age of Comics and his Timely Comics covers featuring Captain America, Namor the Sub-Mariner, The Human Torch and other superheroes. Offered here is 6.75x8.75" piece of stiff artpaper w/watercolor original art for preliminary cover for paperback cover to Andre Norton's "Lord Of Thunder." Norton is known for her sci-fi and fantasy works, of which "Lord Of Thunder" is a sequel to one of Norton's earlier works - "The Beast Master," of which the "Beastmaster" film and TV series is loosely based on. Norton was also the first woman inducted by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. Another cover design by Schomburg was chosen for the Ace Science Fiction paperback edition of "Lord Of Thunder" (F-243) in 1963, but this art shows what could have been, w/titular character standing on edge of ravine, calling down lightning and fire on retreating group of aliens. A drone-like device hovers overhead. Schomburg's signature appears at lower right of art. Bottom margin has "Lord Of Thunder" penciled name and Schomburg has signed in black ink at lower right. Top margin has two aged pieces of masking tape and three pin holes. Back has masking tape border, not affecting front's display. Art remains clean and Exc. and would look great matted and framed. Comes w/double-mat and backing, which has also been signed by Schomburg, who added "To Becky & Bill With Love - Alex Schomburg - Feb, 1979."
