Item Description
11-5/8x17.75" thin artboard w/India ink original art by Charles "Doc" Winner. Art is for Aug. 18, 1935 and features total 12 panels (counting both title panels, each having title paste-overs). Top row of panels are for "Daffy Doodles," a collection of single panel gags consisting of "Mid-Summer Brainstorms From Our Readers." These are mostly word play in nature. "Alexander Smart, Esq." page consists of six panels, featuring Alexander about to start fire, only for his wife to scold him about getting smoke and soot in the house via the opened windows. Alexander bets her a dollar there won't be any smoke as he places electric fan beside the fire, blowing it into the neighbor's yard. Second to last panel reveals sobbing neighbor pointing to her sooty clothing hanging on the line, exclaiming "Just Look! -- All Ruined!" to her angry husband. Alexander quickly runs inside, asking for the dollar from his wife so he can run away. Last panel has hand-inked message to fellow cartoonist Joe Musial (of "The Katzenjammer Kids"  fame), reading "To My Old Cellmate Joe Musial, Hoping He'll Get Out Soon." Last panel has text correction paste-over. Fourth panel has King Features Syndicate copyright strip. Back has pasted printer's label and front left/right margins have printer centering labels. Top left and right center margins have faint inked date stamp. Margins have been trimmed, not affecting art. Pin holes at top corners and along margins. Artboard is evenly aged w/some scattered soiling, but art remains clean and VF overall.
