Item Description
11x17" DC Comics artboard has Mike Dringenberg's penciled original art w/inks by Malcolm Jones III for page 33 of "Sandman" Vol. 2 #14, published by DC's Vertigo imprint March 1990. Dringenberg came to prominence  w/his work on "Sandman," where he started as the series' inker over pencil art by Sam Kieth but switched to penciling when Kieth left after the fifth issue. He drew eleven issues, all but one inked by Malcolm Jones III, and his understated, realistic style did much to establish the tone of the series. He is also notable for co-creating the popular character Death. Art features seven panels, w/top consisting of large splash panel (actually constructed of two separate artboards, attached at bottom of splash panel via tape on back). Splash panel features beautiful image of Dream holding an unconscious Rose Walker, whom Dream tells to heal and leave the building where a serial killer "Collectors" convention is being held. Bottom panels feature the enormous character Fun Land, who has pleasant dreams about his child victims, who ask him to be their friends and play in the gardens they call paradise. Last panel shows a groggy Rose stumbling to her feet, making her way out. Dream's distinctive dialog balloons are paste-overs and small strip of text at bottom center has corrected text paste-over as well. Lower left corner of splash panel has been initialed and dated by Dringenberg in black ink. Back of artboard has inked inker information and DC Comics copyright inkstamp. Top margin has title and issue/page numbers in black marker. Artboard has some scattered handling wear w/some aging along left margin. Art remains clean and Exc. Stunning example of "Sandman" art from early in Neil Gaiman's iconic comic series. Published "Sandman" art continues to become more and more desirable and coveted among collectors. Privately held since shortly after publication, this is the first time this art has been offered at auction.
