Item Description
Beginning in the 1930s, Sam Gold was instrumental in convincing advertising agencies and ad departments of major companies to use comic characters in their merchandising. The five following lots of original art were created for that purpose in the 1940s. Gold and Al Leowenthal (the head of Famous Artists Syndicate) were close friends. Leowenthal's artists created this art and sent it to Gold. The first lot was used by Gold to create direct mail pieces showing how FAS characters could be used in a typical merchandising campaign. The other four lots (two title characters per sheet) were used much in the way a style guide would be used to introduce the various main characters and their associated characters to ad agencies that might want to utilize the characters as a tie-in w/client's product. This first lot features Dick Tracy and cast. Four 11x21" thin artboards w/India ink original art, each artboard featuring two or three distinct scenes w/text in blue or lead pencil. First artboard features Chief telling Tracy that Sam Gold is missing; they round up suspects; Pat Patton pulls Gold's file from the "File Of Prominent People." Second artboard features Dick Tracy and Chief grilling villains Flattop; w/Tracy talking to Shakey, Itchy, BB Eyes and Gravel Gertie w/B.O. Plenty; Pat Patton theorizes Gold's disappearance may be due to amnesia. Third artboard features Tracy and Tracy Jr. visiting Vitamin Flintheart to ask about Gold, w/Flintheart going on TV to help find Gold. Fourth artboard features Tracy informing Flintheart that Gold has been found and they celebrate at restaurant w/Chief and Tracy Jr. Last image shows Pat using his Two Way Wrist Radio to let Tracy know Gold is on his way. Each artboard comes w/accompanying negative image photosats of the art. Boards have slightest traces of aging at top/bottom margins as one tape together, but art remains clean and Exc. Unique lot. This and the following four lots (#2220-2223) are among the most interesting and detailed of any Gold original art items we have offered over the years. From the archives of premium creators Sam & Gordon Gold and comes with LOA.
