Item Description
13.75x16-3/8" vellum sheet has colorful mixed media original art for proposed premium sign advertising "Book Of Mysteries And Magic Tricks" that was offered as a premium by Servel Gas Refrigerators in the 1950s. Prototype sign includes cartoon image of turban-clad swami gesturing to hand-colored book cover stat. Lower left has illustration of gas flame and ice cubes. Sign has hand-lettered text noting "12 Thrilling Mysteries For You To Solve... Plus Magic Tricks To Fool Your Friends!" Additional text notes "Free To Adults Or Children Who Bring Dad Or Mom With Them!" Sheet margins have been folded over and secured on back w/tape, resulting in some lines of age tanning. Sheet shows moderate handling wear w/creases as folded. VG/Fine overall. Unique. Comes w/8x10.75" prototype premium book w/mixed media original art cover showing turban-clad swami using magic to turn boiling liquid inside test tube into ice cubes. "Servel" Gas Refrigerator name/logo at bottom. Hand-lettered/painted "Thrilling Mysteries To Solve! Also Magic Tricks For You To Perform" title on cover. Top of cover has penciled names of Sam Gold and Einson Freeman, w/whom Gold frequently worked. Book has 30 pages, inside front cover has wonderful mixed media original art illustration of magicians and wizards w/1950 Servel, Inc. copyright penciled at bottom. Total of five other pages features all original art, including four comic style pages comprising "Mystery Number 1 - The Christmas Gift Clue" and "Mystery Number 2 - Case Of The Woodland Trigger Man." Both strips are nicely illustrated w/all hand-lettered text. Several other pages blocked out in pencil for additional Mystery pages, but w/o art. Four other pages feature hand-colored and pasted cut-out stats, including pages advertising refrigerators and their features. Back cover is blank aside from pencil notation regarding additional Servel advertisement. Prototype book has some scattered dust soiling/aging and lt. handling wear w/1" area of surface paper loss on back cover w/.25" edge tear. Fine overall. An exceptional, unique lot.
