Item Description
9.75x25.5" open mat contains 7.25x23" thin artboard w/four panels of India ink original art by Milton Caniff for May 27, 1955 daily strip. Faint stamped "Steve Canyon" title at top left above pasted title stat. Field Enterprises, Inc. copyright strips in first panel. Art shows Steve Canyon in his superior's office, discussing the polio vaccine being sold on the black market before going on to state that the Navy hospital has enough serum for military personnel. Third panel notes that the "Chinese Reds" are about to be caught in a trap as fourth panel shows Asian city street scene. Second panel has redrawn image of Canyon's superior on pasted artboard. Cartoonist-creator Milton Caniff signed second panel and faded (but still legible) inscription at top margin reads "For Henry J. Newmark - With Best Wishes From Milton Caniff - N.Y. Sept. 1956." Art has some scattered staining along bottom 1.5" and artboard has pin holes at top corners. Artboard has been glued to mat backing. Still displays Fine overall.
