Item Description
Sketches are on 11.25x13" sheet of vellum that is tape mounted to center of a sheet of 11x14.25" white paper. Preliminary sketches include Byrd's notes on color and pencil notation at top right of second reads "Back Cover Renée Reflected In Aviators Centered On 12x12". Each sketch is signed at bottom "19 David Edward Byrd 74" and both have only minor handling. Exc. Also included is a 12.25" square original album proof signed boldly in the left margin. Scattered dots of age toning along the left side in cream background. VF. No doubt an outstanding group of artifacts from Reeds fourth and highest charting solo album after departing the Velvet Underground, but these sketches are truly exciting for the window they provide into the work of one of the eras most important artists and cultural trend setters.

Speaking on his front and back cover of the back cover Bryd reflects "The most that I can remember about doing this album is that I met with Lou Reed at The Ninth Circle, an old gay bar on Christopher Street where Edward Albee drank, as well as my very own self. He brought a shoebox filled with SX-70 Polaroids of various drags and transsexuals. One of these was Sally, who can't dance and from the photographic evidence Sally liked to be swathed in Saran Wrap whenever possible, sometimes quite tightly, and always, of course, in the buff. No wonder she can't dance, she's mummified! I wonder if Sally survived the 70s - not a lot of us eccentric folk did!" I put her face reflected in a close-up of his sunglasses on the back of the album. He was a handsome man, in a damaged sort of way."
