Item Description
21x22.5" artboard w/India ink art original art for March 23, 1947 Sunday page. Page is constructed out of four approx. 5.5x21" strips that have been taped together. No title panel/topper. Art features 12 panels w/Pappy Yokum worrying about delay in receiving important letter, only to find out that mail carrier's transportation - U.S. Mule - is ill and will be months recovering. This causes Pappy to worry more as Mammy Yokum observes from cabin window. Once she leaves, a devilish look comes across Pappy's face as he devises plan to steal the letter from the post office. Climbing through a broken window, Pappy is dismayed to remember he can't read and as such, has no idea which letter is his. Deciding to take them all, the mailman sounds the alarm, chasing Pappy down the hill on U.S. Mule, who bites Pappy's bottom before mailman carries him back w/the recovered mail to rest. Capp has signed last panel, which has bold "To Be Continued" text. Second to last panel has UFS copyright strip. Top corners have aged tape strips and strips were attached at left/right margins, resulting in six further aged tape strips. Back has horizontal brown paper tape strip running length of page at center, though this is now somewhat loose. Aged tape strips on back as well. Artboards are VG/Fine overall, but art remains clean and VF overall. Richard Calusdian Collection.
