Item Description
16.5x22-1/8" custom double-mat contains artboard w/pen and ink original art for page 2 of "All-American Comics" #47, published by DC Comics in Feb. 1943. Art is by Irwin Hasen (1918-2015), noted for his 1940s work on Green Lantern and for creating Justice Society of America member Wildcat. Page features eight panels, w/Irene telling a story to Doiby Dickles and Alan Scott (the Golden Age Green Lantern's secret identity), telling of how she was called by a friend to meet for lunch. The call was mysterious as they had not talked in years and the caller said she needed a reliable witness as she was meeting someone. At the restaurant, they are shown to a table, where a man speaking German arrives, insisting he knows Irene, who is shocked to find her friend has disappeared, leaving her alone w/the stranger. Bottom margin has been remarqued by Hasen, who has signed his name at lower left, adding a Green Lantern mask and Doiby's derby hat, dating the remarque "12/24/11." Art has been double-matted w/title, issue number and publication date label at top center. Hasen has further remarqued the inner mat, drawing a caricature of DC Comics editor Shelly Mayer, who rejects page of art, stating "You Call This A Panel?" Additional "In The Office 1940" pencil notation at lower right. Artboard has been mounted to foamcore and is ready for framing. Art is clean and Exc. Dan Makara Collection.
