Item Description
14.25x20.25" artboard w/pen and ink original art for title page of "Tomahawk" #35, published by DC Comics Sept. 1955. Art is by Fred Ray (1920-2001), best known as the primary "Superman, Batman" and "World's Finest" cover-artist of the 1940s, whose work helped shape the defining look of DC Comic's iconic superhero characters, and for his more than two decades as artist of the DC Comics feature "Tomahawk." Art is for first page of cover story "The White Buffalo" and features Tomahawk encountering a young Davy Crockett. Page features large splash panel of Tomahawk leading the buffalo as Davy rides it, a Native American hunting party in close pursuit. Two panels at bottom show Mohawk Indians buffalo hunt. Top of artboard has "DC/Tomahawk" topper, which is printed state paste-over, as is large "Tomahawk" title at top of splash panel. Margins have some scattered production notations and aging. Artboard is Fine/VF, but art remains clean and Exc. Dan Makara Collection.
