Item Description
Pair of thin artboards w/India ink original art by Harold Knerr, who took over the strip from creator Rudolph Dirks. Artboards measure 8.75x23" and 9.25x23" and comprise the complete Sunday page for Jan. 17, 1932. Art features total of 12 panels and shows Der Captain and Der Inspector picking up Rajah Rhin Juhki of Dihn aboard their ship, "Weenie." They bring the Rajah home to introduce him to Mama Katzenjammer only to spot Hans and Fritz sticking a tack on chair he is about to sit on. He mentions he's not afraid of a tack, so the boys up their game, hammering several nails into a board and sitting it nail side up on chair the Rajah is about to sit on. He sits on it w/no sign of pain let alone discomfort. He then hands then a business card showing photo of his act, "'The Bed Of Spikes'." Captain then of course sits on the nail chair and proceeds to hunt the boys who are hiding in the woods. Knerr has signed last panel, which has Int'l Features Syndicate, Inc. copyright strip. Left/right margins have faint inkstamp dates w/right margins having blue pencil date on each artboard. Back has two strips of tape staining, but tape has aged and fallen off. New, blue painter's tape has been added on back to secure artboards together. Margins have some scattered spots of moisture staining, only affecting art at top right corner and in first panel. Fine overall w/art in top artboard displays VF while bottom artboard's art displays Exc.
