Item Description
"Dondi" was a daily comic strip about a large-eyed war orphan of the same name. Created by Gus Edson and Irwin Hasen, it ran in more than 100 newspapers for three decades (Sept. 25, 1955 to June 8, 1986). Offered here is 25x32.5" wooden frame holds Hasen's pen and ink original art for Feb. 12, 1956 "Dondi" Sunday page. Art features eight panels (including illustrated and hand-lettered title panel), showing Dondi and his adopted father leaving the cold on airplane and arriving on warm tropical island. Dondi is amazed by the trip, marveling that the plane has ice cream before falling asleep. Upon waking, he declares "Dondi Fall Asleep In Wintertime - Wake Up In Summertime!" Top left has Chicago Tribune copyright strip. Bottom right has been signed and dated "8/12/1956" and has Hasen's "To My Dear Friend Dan" personal inscription. Each panel was cut out and applied to larger sheet, w/some aging to edges and minor scattered rippling. Art is VF overall. Art is further enhanced by crafted custom matte created by artist Dan Makara, featuring cut out "Dondi" newspaper strips from 1950s. Dan Makara Collection.
